The Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina (USC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Psychology with expertise in applying artificial intelligence to understand and transform brain health. Highly qualified applicants may be considered for Associate Professor. We seek candidates who can leverage our existing strengths in brain health across the lifespan, aphasia, and dementia, including resources such as the Institute of Mind and Brain, the Aging Brain Cohort, the Center for the Study of Aphasia Recovery, and the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging, which houses a 3T Prisma MRI.
The new hire would ideally possess the skills and expertise to integrate with our upcoming health science campus, including the Rural Brain Health Network hub with its new 3T wide bore and 7T TerraX MRI. The Cognitive and Neural Sciences Concentration in the Department of Psychology includes fourteen faculty members with expertise in multiple areas of cognitive neuroscience, including language, attention, social and affective neuroscience, and executive function. We are looking for a candidate with a promising record and demonstrated commitment to building a high-impact research career who can interface with one or more of these areas with expertise relevant to artificial intelligence, such as those in machine learning or Large Language Models. A collaborative and supportive research environment includes members of the Institute for Mind and Brain, which span multiple colleges and departments, including Computer Science and Engineering and Communication Sciences and Disorders. The candidate should be dedicated to mentoring and teaching undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will join a thriving network of scholars with an outstanding availability of resources that includes facilities for functional and structural MRI, EEG, TMS, HD-tDCS, fNIRS, and eye tracking.
This position is for a 9-month tenure-track appointment in the Department of Psychology. The position requires a doctoral degree by the beginning date of employment (August 16, 2025). The University of South Carolina is a Carnegie University of Very High Research Activity (R1). The Psychology Department, which averages more than $8 million annually in external funding (a campus leader), has 80+ doctoral students and more than 1400 undergraduate majors.
