The Goldin-Meadow Laboratory and the Environmental Neuroscience Lab (PI: Marc Berman) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago are seeking a postdoctoral researcher beginning in August 2024 (start date is flexible). The postdoctoral researcher will join a team investigating how action and gesture instruction differentially affect children’s ability to learn, generalize, and retain information related to a math lesson using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The postdoctoral researcher will participate in all aspects of research management, development, and implementation. They will oversee design, data collection, coding, and analysis for the children’s behavioral and fNIRS data. Additionally, the postdoc will manage a team of research assistants and early-career graduate students. They will be responsible for preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting research findings at scientific conferences.
The postdoctoral researcher will work with the team to apply cutting edge analysis and modeling techniques to the data, which involve multivariate analysis, network analysis, non-linear dynamics measures and classification techniques that the ENL applies to their data regularly. The postdoctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to be involved in other projects in the labs, including behavioral analyses of gesture and working with large datasets such as the ABCD adolescent neuroimaging dataset.
A doctoral degree is required in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, physics, or other related fields. Experience with neuroimaging data and neuroimaging analysis packages (e.g., Brain AnalyzIR, BrainVoyager, SPM, AFNI, FSL, Nipype) is desirable. Proficiency in the following programming languages: MATLAB, Python, R, Java, C/C++ or JavaScript is also preferred. Experience conducting studies with children, supervising and coordinating the work of others, and strong project management skills are also preferred.
